New Swindon Half Marathon to pass through Wichelstowe
The new Swindon Half Marathon will be passing through Wichelstowe on Sunday 3rd September. The route through Wichelstowe will take runners along Redposts Drive, Peglars Way, Foxham Way and Blackhorse Way. East Wichel Community Association will be running an ‘atmosphere station’ on Blackhorse Way near the Bayberry pub between 11.45 am and 2.30 pm and six local people will be running the half marathon to raise money for next year’s community trip.
The main roads through Wichelstowe listed above will be closed eastbound — from Wootton Bassett Road to Croft Road — from 10.45 am to up to 3.30 pm, with the time of re-opening depending on how quickly the last of the runners pass through. Traffic westbound — from Croft Road to Wootton Bassett Road — will not be affected. Road access to and from East Wichel will be limited to Eyam Way, where traffic will be controlled so as not to obstruct the runners.
There will also be some disruption to bus services in the afternoon. Stagecoach service 9 southbound to Wroughton will run via Drove Road and Pipers Way instead of Victoria Road and Croft Road, and in East Wichel will run via Blackhorse Way and Eyam Road, missing the Collard Close and Rylane bus stops. Northbound, service 9 will follow its normal route through East Wichel and up Croft Road, then be diverted via Bath Road, Westcott Place and Station Road instead of running down Victoria Road. Normal services should resume by 4 pm. Thamesdown service 11 will also be disrupted but Thamesdown Transport have not specified [pdf] what the changes to their service will be.
