Footbridge closure

Unsafe bridgeSwindon Borough Council have made an order for ‘temporary’ closure of the footbridge on the path between the track past Westlecott Farm Cottages and the school end of Stonehenge Road. The footbridge was originally part of the footpath from the top of Mill Lane in Old Town, across Blackhorse Bridge, to Wroughton. When Blackhorse Bridge was closed and several footpaths diverted, it became part of the route of the temporary footpath form Mill Lane in West Leaze to Croft Road.

“The Order comes into force on the 24 August 2011 for 6 months up to 24 January 2012 and is required on the grounds of health and safety”

There are several similar footbridges in the Wichelstowe area and at least one (near Mill Lane in West Leaze) had decayed to the point of collapse several years ago. Today this footbridge still appeared open, but with the direct route to Blackhorse Bridge now being along the other end of Stonehenge Road and Eyam Road, and the footpath diversion to Croft Road now over, this footbridge would seem to be redundant.
